Chibi Reviews #3 | Bloody Bones & The Killing Dance

chibi reviews new“Chibi” is a Japanese slang word used often to describe something short and cute in anime/manga/Japanese pop culture. Chibi Reviews is a future showcasing books I’m too lazy to review “short and sweet” reviews.

Hey y’all! I’m back with more Anita Blake! Today I’m reviewing BLOODY BONES and THE KILLING DANCE, books five and six in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series.

First, there were the dead in the graveyard – two-hundred years dead. I’d been hired to raise them to settle a dispute over who owned the land they were buried in.

Then there were the three dead teenagers in the woods, slaughtered in a way I had never seen before.

And then they found the dead girl, drained of blood and left in her bed.

I knew what that meant, all right. It didn’t take a degree in preternatural studies to figure out that something was very wrong in and around Branson, Missouri. My name is Anita Blake. Welcome to my life..

When Anita Blake is asked to raise 300-year-old zombies to settle a land dispute in Branson, Missouri, the job becomes a lot more interesting than she originally expected. A psychotic vampire begins committing murders in the area and Blake must call on her fanged boyfriend for help.

What I enjoyed:

  • Anita Blake finally stops thinking of Jean-Claude as a monster anymore, and finally sees him as not just a powerfully seductive vampire, but as a man. Seems like a healthy step forward in their relationship (but never fear, the drama is not over. With Anita it’s always “one step forward, two steps back”).
  • The fae make an appearance! I always love when LKH packs in more supernatural creatures.
  • The blood and gore

What I disliked:

  • Anita is still with Richard. Yuck.
  • Even more relationship drama… Yippee.

Though BLOODY BONES wasn’t the perfect, it did sport an unusual and fascinating murder mystery to whet a readers supernatural appetite.

Anita Blake, vampire hunter, is now herself a hunted woman. Who put the $500,000 price on her head–a man or a monster? It’s not just her own skin she needs to save; the rivalry between her werewolf boyfriend, Richard, and Marcus, the other alpha werewolf in his pack, has come to full boil. And there’s always Jean-Claude, the vampire who’s been waiting for just the right moment to slip inside Anita’s head and heart. Don’t assume anything, though–Hamilton’s probably got a few more surprises in store.

INFURIATING

In THE KILLING DANCE by Laurell K. Hamilton, Anita Blake continues to explore her relationship with her two very different romantic interests—Jean-Claude, Master of the City and the sexiest vampire around, and Richard Zeeman, the werewolf that hates himself almost as much as I hate him—while also juggling werewolf politics and investigating unsolved murders.

As usual, Blake is a busy bee, which keeps her from having to think to hard about her love life. With everything going on, things do finally come to a head in her relationship with Zeeman, which I am so relieved about. Even so, she continues to waffle about her feelings for the unworthy man.

Am I frustrated by Blake’s choice in romantic partners? Yes. Do I think Jean-Claude is the sexiest undead man a girl can ask for? Hell yes. Do I find it annoying as hell that Anita continues to question his love for her? Yes, yes I do.

At this point in the series, the murder mystery and preternatural intrigue keep me from dwelling too much on how frustrating I find Anita’s love life. Thankfully there is plenty to go around in the sixth Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter novel.
