TBT Review #21 | Fantasy Lover

throwback thursday reviewsThrowback Thursday Reviews is a weekly meme here @ A Weebish Book Blog. It is a chance to tweak old book reviews, share them with others, and perhaps fall in love with some old favorites.

*By tweaking reviews I do not mean I will be changing review ratings or my opinions, since those are likely to change over the years . I will only be changing grammar errors, wording, sentence structure, etc.

Dear Reader,

Being trapped in a bedroom with a woman is a grand thing. Being trapped in hundreds of bedrooms over two thousand years isn’t. And being cursed into a book as a love-slave for eternity can ruin even a Spartan warrior’s day.

As a love-slave, I know everything about women. How to touch them, how to savor them, and most of all, how to pleasure them. But when I was summoned to fulfill Grace Alexander’s sexual fantasies, I found the first woman in history who saw me as a man with a tormented past. She alone bothered to take me out of the bedroom and onto the world. She taught me to love again.

But I was not born to love. I was cursed to walk eternity alone. As a general, I had long ago accepted my sentence. Yet now I have found Grace–the one thing my wounded heart cannot survive without. Sure, love can heal all wounds, but can it break a two-thousand-year-old curse?

Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series is an old favorite PNR favorite—one of the first I discovered in middle school that began my addiction to the fanged and supernatural. I have re-read portions of the series time and again, but this time I am trying to make an effort to read the prolific series in order. And to finally get caught up! If you’ve read Kenyon’s Dark-Hunter series, you can understand how difficult it may be to figure out where to start. FANTASY LOVER is the very first  full-length novel in the Dark-Hunterverse world but it does not revolve around a Dark-Hunter character, though many important DHs do make an appearance.

Grace Alexander is a sex therapist who has sworn of sex forever until one night of drinking accidentally conjures Julian of Macedon, the once mighty Spartan warrior and now cursed sex-slave. Once Grace stops freaking out about discovering a strange naked man loose in her house and realized what she’s done, she is not pleased.

Grace was a charming heroine and I do enjoy the limited appearances she makes in the other Dark-Hunter novels, but I do have to question her sanity. If a naked, beautifully built male specimen decorated my living room, I’d spend my time perfectly satisfied with his naked status, not forcing him to wear clothes.

Give FANTASY LOVER a shot if:

  • You like your PNR graced with a heaping spoonful of laugh-out-loud humor
  • You’ve ever wanted a big hunk of love to worship all your curves and imperfections
  • You like your heroines snarky and sarcastic but also kind and compassionate
  • You love a tortured hero as much as I do

Although FANTASY LOVER will never top my favorite Dark-Hunter novels, Julian and Graces humorous, heartbreaking, and action-packed romance holds a special place in my heart.

If you love a world full of supernatural, mythological creatures, humor that rivals Shelly Laurenston, and kick-ass characters, give the Dark-Hunter series a shot. Just remember to keep the tissues on hand, because this series is all about the tortured heroes and forbidden romance.
